Summary

Swim with whale sharks trek Padar meet Komodo dragons by boat

You’ll board in Lombok and cross to Flores by boat, swimming with whale sharks in calm waters before trekking up Padar Island for wild views. Snorkel around Pink Beach and Rinca while your local guide keeps an eye out for Komodo dragons (and maybe your lost flip-flop). Meals are simple but filling; nights are spent rocking gently at sea. Expect some surprises — good ones.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We pushed off from Bangsal harbor in Lombok just as the sun started to burn through the morning haze — I could still smell clove cigarettes from a nearby fisherman, and our guide (I think his name was Agus?) handed out bananas with a grin. The boat felt like a floating camp: backpacks everywhere, people finding their corners. Someone’s playlist mixed with the slap of waves. Agus ran through the plan in quick Bahasa and English — honestly, I caught about half of it but figured we’d just follow along. It felt like everyone was half awake and excited at once.

The first real jolt came swimming with whale sharks. I’d read about it but didn’t expect how quiet it would be underwater — just my own breath and these massive shapes gliding past. A girl from Surabaya laughed when I flinched at a sudden tail flick (she said they’re gentle, but still). Back on deck, salt dried on my skin and lunch was basic rice and tempeh, but tasted perfect after that swim. The boat kept moving — sometimes you’d lose track of which island was which until someone pointed out Komodo or Padar in the distance.

Padar Island itself is steeper than it looks in photos. We climbed early before the sun got too mean; the path dusty underfoot, goats somewhere out of sight. At the top, everyone just sort of fell quiet for a minute — not sure if it was the view or just catching our breath. Later we stopped at Pink Beach (the sand really does have that weird blush color) and Rinca to spot dragons. Our local guide kept tossing jokes about “dragon selfies” but also watched us like a hawk — those things are no joke up close.

Last stop was Majerite Beach near Kelor Island. By then most of us were sunburned and salty, half asleep on deck mats as we drifted in. There’s something about waking up at sea that sticks with you — I still remember how strong the coffee tasted that last morning, sitting next to Agus as he pointed out little fishing boats heading home. Not everything went smoothly (someone lost a sandal overboard), but honestly that’s part of why I’d do this trip again.
