Summary

Positano’s pastel houses, Amalfi’s cathedral & Ravello gardens in one relaxed day

You’ll wind along the Amalfi Coast by minivan with a small group from Sorrento, stopping for free time in Positano’s colorful streets, exploring Amalfi’s historic cathedral, and wandering Ravello’s peaceful gardens high above the sea. Expect local stories from your driver and those little moments that stay with you long after you’re home.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“Here, you smell the lemons before you see them,” our driver Marco said as we curved out of Sorrento. He wasn’t kidding — the air really did have this citrusy tang, especially when we rolled down the windows and let the breeze in. There were just six of us in the minivan, which felt about right for these winding roads. I kept trying to snap photos but honestly, every turn looked like a postcard and my camera couldn’t keep up.

First stop was Positano. I’d seen it on Instagram but it’s different when you’re actually standing there — tiny shops stacked up the cliff, old men chatting outside a bakery, that faint salty smell from the beach below. We had an hour to wander so I grabbed a coffee (too hot to drink at first) and just watched people weaving through those narrow lanes. It was busy but somehow not overwhelming — maybe because everyone seemed happy to be lost together?

Amalfi came next. Marco told us about its history as a maritime republic while we walked towards St. Andrew’s Cathedral. The steps are steeper than they look — I nearly tripped on my way up because I was distracted by a group of kids kicking a ball nearby. Inside, it was cool and quiet; outside, sunlight bounced off white stone and made me squint. Lunch was quick — just some lemon granita and a slice of focaccia eaten on a bench — but honestly perfect for that moment.

Ravello felt like another world entirely. Up above the coast, it was quieter, almost hushed except for church bells somewhere in the distance. Villa Rufolo’s gardens were open and green — apparently Wagner loved this place? I didn’t know much about him but I could see why he’d want to write music here. The view stretched all the way down to Maiori and Amalfi, blue sea fading into haze. On the drive back to Sorrento I dozed off for a bit, head against the window, still thinking about those lemon trees and how Marco laughed when someone asked if he ever got tired of this road (he just shook his head).
