What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the smell—somewhere between roasted coffee and that salty air you only get in Sicilian cities like Catania. Our guide, Marta, met us right at our apartment door (which felt oddly personal, but also kind of comforting). She had this easy way of talking—half Italian, half English—that made me forget I was technically on a “private walking tour Catania.” We didn’t have a set route; she just asked what we liked and shrugged, “We’ll see what feels right.”

I still laugh thinking about the fish market—Marta taught us to say “pesce spada” (swordfish), but I’m sure my accent was tragic. The vendors didn’t mind; one old guy winked and handed me a lemon wedge. There’s something about the way people here gesture when they talk—bigger than life, like they’re painting in the air. We wandered past faded baroque facades and she pointed out which balconies were safe to stand on (apparently not all of them). The sun kept shifting behind clouds, so sometimes it felt warm, then suddenly cool again.

At one point we stopped for granita—almond for me, pistachio for my partner. It was sweet but not too much. Marta explained how locals order it for breakfast in summer (I still can’t decide if that’s genius or madness). She told us stories about the piazza where students gather at night and the best spot for arancini if we got hungry later. By the end I realized I wasn’t checking Google Maps anymore—I actually knew where I was for once. That felt good.
