What’s the experience like?

“You’re looking for Anna?” That’s what I heard as soon as I stepped off the ship at Civitavecchia port, kind of blinking in the morning sun. Our driver was there with my name on a sign (and he actually pronounced it right, which never happens). He smiled, took my suitcase before I could even protest, and led us straight to this shiny Mercedes that somehow already felt cooler than the ship’s air conditioning. There was cold water waiting — honestly, after a week of salty sea air, that little detail just hit different.

The drive into Rome wasn’t just a blur of highways like I expected. Our driver — Marco — started pointing out things as we got closer: “That’s where Romans go for gelato,” he said, waving at some tiny shop by the roadside. We talked about football (I pretended to know more than I do), and he gave us tips on where locals actually eat near our hotel. The city sort of crept up on us — first old stone walls, then suddenly we were weaving through these narrow streets with scooters zipping past. At one point Marco slowed down so we could see the dome of St. Peter’s peeking over rooftops. It smelled like espresso somewhere nearby; maybe that’s just Rome all over.

I didn’t expect a transfer to feel like an introduction — but it did. Even though it was just an hour or so from Civitavecchia port to Rome, it felt like someone quietly handed us the keys to the city. Marco helped with every bag (I overpacked again), made sure we had Wi-Fi for maps and messages, and waited until we’d found our hotel door before saying goodbye. He told me next time to try saying “grazie mille” with more Roman flair — I probably butchered it but he laughed anyway. Still think about that little moment.
