What’s the experience like?

I still remember the weird quiet of Civitavecchia port that morning—just the sound of suitcase wheels and gulls. Our driver, Marco, was waiting right outside customs with this half-smile like he’d seen every kind of traveler before. The Mercedes was spotless but not flashy, which I liked. He asked if we wanted coffee before heading into Rome (I said yes, obviously), so we stopped at a little bar for espresso that tasted almost burnt but in a good way—like you’re really in Italy now.

Rome hit us all at once—traffic, scooters darting around, sunlight bouncing off old stone. Marco threaded through it like he’d been doing this since birth. First stop: the Colosseum. He pointed out a spot where gladiators would have entered (“Imagine the noise,” he said), and honestly I got chills just thinking about it. We didn’t go inside (not enough time), but standing there, you could feel the weight of it. Circus Maximus was next—just a stretch of grass now but Marco described chariot races so vividly I half-expected to hear hooves pounding past. He kept tossing in stories about emperors and ancient bets; I probably forgot half of them already.

We zigzagged through the city—Palatine Hill, then up to Aventine for that keyhole view (which was smaller than I thought but somehow perfect). At Piazza del Campidoglio, an older couple asked Marco for directions in rapid Italian; he switched languages without blinking, then turned back to us grinning. “Romans always know better,” he joked. There were moments when the city felt almost too much—Vittoriano gleaming white against blue sky, Pantheon’s cool shadow inside—but then you’d catch a whiff of pine from some hidden garden or hear church bells echoing down narrow streets and it all slowed down again.

The Trevi Fountain was packed but we elbowed our way close enough to toss coins (I missed on my first try—don’t judge). Spanish Steps were swarming with teenagers taking selfies; we didn’t linger long. Driving towards Vatican City, Marco pointed out Castel Sant’Angelo and told us how popes used to escape through secret corridors—I didn’t expect that part. St. Peter’s Square felt enormous and hushed at the same time; even with crowds everywhere there was this weird calm under the dome’s shadow.

By late afternoon my feet were tired even though we’d barely walked—I guess Rome does that to you. Marco got us back to Civitavecchia right on time (he checked his watch twice just to be sure). Sometimes I wonder if I dreamed that whole day—the jumble of ruins and sunlight and espresso—but then I find a stray coin in my pocket and remember how real it all felt.
