What’s the experience like?

We slid away from the port of Trapani just after ten, the engine humming under our feet and that salty breeze already working its way into my hair. Our skipper — I think his name was Marco, but honestly I never caught it properly — grinned as he steered us out toward the Egadi Islands. There’s this moment when you leave the mainland behind and the water turns that impossible blue. Someone opened a bottle of cold soda and it fizzed in the sun. I remember thinking: this is what summer should feel like.

The first stop was Favignana. We dropped anchor near a cove where the water looked almost fake — so clear you could see every flicker of fish below. I jumped in before I could talk myself out of it; it was colder than I expected but in a good way, if that makes sense. A couple next to me laughed when I tried to say “bellissimo” with my mouth full of seawater. After drying off, we docked at the village and wandered through narrow streets smelling faintly of grilled calamari and sunscreen. The locals didn’t seem in any rush — one old man waved at us from his chair outside a shop selling tiny ceramic boats.

Later, on Levanzo, Marco mentioned there was a trek up to a pine forest if anyone wanted something different before we circled back by boat. Only two people took him up on it (not me — my legs were still jelly from swimming). The rest of us lounged on deck with another drink, just listening to the gentle slap of waves against hull and watching clouds drift over the island’s hills. It’s funny how quickly you forget about your phone or anything urgent out there.
