What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the Vespa to feel so light under me — or maybe I was just nervous. Our guide, Matteo, grinned as he watched me fumble with the helmet strap (he said it’s always tricky the first time). The drive out of Florence was quiet, just the low hum of conversation in the van and that early Tuscan light flickering through olive trees. By the time we reached Chianti, I could smell wild herbs in the air, sharp and green. It hit me then — this wasn’t going to be like any “day trip from Florence” I’d done before.

The test ride was honestly a bit humbling. Matteo made us loop around the lot twice (“Don’t worry, everyone wobbles at first!”). Once we hit those winding roads, though — wow. The Vespa felt like an old friend after ten minutes. Vineyards rolled past in these endless stripes of green and gold. At one point, we stopped for photos and you could see San Gimignano’s towers way off in the haze; someone joked they looked like chess pieces left out in the sun. I tried to say “San Gimignano” properly but probably butchered it — Matteo laughed and gave up correcting me.

Lunch at the winery was…well, let’s just say I’m still thinking about that olive oil. The owners greeted us with this warmth that felt like visiting family you haven’t met yet. We wandered between rows of vines while they explained how their wine is made (I understood maybe half, but it didn’t matter). Then came plates of pasta, bread so crusty it scratched my fingers, glasses filled again before I noticed they were empty. The wine had this earthy smell — almost like rain on stone — and there was a moment when everyone just went quiet tasting it.

Riding back through Chianti after lunch was slower somehow; maybe it was all that food or maybe none of us wanted it to end yet. The sky had shifted to that soft gold you only get in Tuscany late afternoon. When we finally handed back our helmets, my hair stuck up everywhere and nobody cared.
