What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest — I thought climbing Vesuvius would be the hard part, but it was actually the silence that got me. Our driver picked us up in Naples right on time, and we wound up the mountain in a van with windows down, catching that mix of pine and sulfur (not as weird as it sounds). At about 1,000 meters, we started walking up to the crater. It’s not Everest, but my legs were definitely awake by the time we reached the rim. The alpine guide pointed out old lava flows and explained how everything below us had changed in seconds back in 79 AD. There’s something strange about looking down into a volcano while feeling the wind whip your hair sideways — I kept thinking about all those people in Pompeii who never saw it coming.

Lunch was at a pizzeria tucked along the road back down — nothing fancy, just flour-dusted tables and a wood-fired oven going hot enough to make you sweat if you sat too close. We had Margherita pizzas (the classic) and Marinara for anyone skipping cheese. I tried to say “grazie” with my mouth full; our server just grinned and shrugged like he’d seen tourists do worse. Maybe he has. The crust was chewy in that perfect way you only get near Naples — I still think about that first bite sometimes when I’m stuck eating reheated leftovers at home.

After lunch we headed to Pompeii itself. Our local guide met us outside the gates and jumped right into stories about daily life — not just emperors or gladiators, but bakers, street vendors, even gossip from old graffiti scratched into walls. Walking through the Forum felt almost too normal until you remember what happened here. The Lupanar (yeah, that’s exactly what you think it is) got some laughs from our group, especially after someone tried reading one of the ancient “menus.” The Stabian Baths smelled faintly of damp stone and dust; our guide said Romans used to debate politics while soaking there. For two hours we wandered sun-baked streets where dogs napped in doorways and bits of mosaic peeked out from rubble. There’s no way to see everything — honestly, my brain was full halfway through — but it didn’t matter.
