What’s the experience like?

We rolled our suitcases past the chaos of Napoli Centrale, and there he was — Antonio, holding my name on a sign, grinning like he knew we’d be tired. It felt weirdly reassuring. He waved us over and took my bag before I could even argue (which I did, half-heartedly). The car smelled faintly of lemon air freshener — or maybe that was just in my head because, well, Campania. Anyway, it was spotless inside. We settled in, windows down just enough for the breeze but not so much that you got blasted by Vesuvian grit.

The drive out of Naples is all horns and scooters darting around like they’re late for something important. Antonio chatted about his favorite pizzerias (he’s loyal to Starita), then pointed out Vesuvius looming behind us. Once we hit the highway, things got quieter — except for his playlist of old Neapolitan songs humming low in the background. Somewhere past Castellammare di Stabia, the sea flashed into view and I couldn’t help leaning over for a better look. The Amalfi Coast road really does twist and climb just like people say; at one point I squeezed my eyes shut around a curve, but Antonio just laughed and said “Positano is always worth a little drama.”

He dropped us as close as possible to our hotel (those narrow streets — forget about it), helped with bags again, and gave us tips on where to find real limoncello that doesn’t taste like syrup. I still think about that first salty breath of Positano air after stepping out of the car — sun-warmed stone, distant espresso from somewhere up the hill. Not sure if it was relief or excitement or both.
