What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the ground to feel so uneven under my shoes—like every stone in Pompeii had its own story. Our driver picked us up right outside our hotel in Naples (honestly, I was grateful not to deal with the train crowds), and by the time we reached the entrance, our guide Claudia was already waving at us. She had this way of making history sound like gossip—pointing out where people used to gather in the Forum, or how the House of the Vettii still shows off those wild frescoes. I tried to pronounce “Stabian Baths” in Italian and she laughed, but kindly corrected me. The air smelled faintly of dust and old pine needles.

We moved through narrow streets where you could almost hear echoes—kids shouting, merchants haggling (or maybe that was just Claudia’s storytelling getting into my head). The skip-the-line thing felt like a small miracle; there were big groups waiting under the sun but we walked straight in. At one point I touched a wall inside Casa dei Vettii—cool and rough—and wondered what it must have been like before everything stopped here in 79 AD. Claudia pointed out details I’d never have noticed alone, like tiny mosaic tiles in the floor or graffiti scratched into stone. My feet were tired but I didn’t want to leave yet.

The drive back to Naples was quiet for a while—maybe we were all replaying scenes from those ruins in our minds. Our driver put on some local radio (lots of chatter and laughter), which somehow made me feel closer to everyday life now after seeing so much of the past. I still think about that view of Vesuvius looming over everything—it’s strange how something so beautiful could change a place forever.
