What’s the experience like?

We were already zipping past Trajan’s Market when I realized how much ground we’d cover without even breaking a sweat. Our guide, Marco, waved at a guy selling roasted chestnuts on the corner—apparently they went to school together. The air smelled faintly sweet and burnt, mixing with exhaust and that old-stone coolness you only get in Rome. I didn’t expect to feel so…in the middle of things, just sitting in this little golf cart as scooters darted around us.

The first time we stopped was right at the Colosseum. Marco let us hop out for photos (“You’ve got three minutes before the crowds move in—trust me!”) and told us about gladiators fighting lions here. I tried to picture it but mostly just stared up at those arches—so many layers of history stacked on top of each other. My niece tried to say “Colosseo” like an Italian and Marco laughed, correcting her gently. There was something about hearing stories from someone who grew up here that made it stick more.

Circus Maximus was next—a wide open space that felt almost too quiet after all the honking and chatter near Piazza Venezia. I could hear birds and someone playing accordion far off. We rolled through the Orange Garden for a quick break; honestly, I didn’t want to leave that spot. The smell of citrus hung in the air and you could see half the city spread out below. I still think about that view sometimes when my phone buzzes too much at home.

We hit all the big names—the Pantheon (that dome is wild), Trevi Fountain (Marco said toss a coin over your left shoulder or it doesn’t count), plus smaller stops like Campo de’ Fiori where people were arguing over tomatoes at a market stall. It never felt rushed; if anything, there was always time for another question or one more photo. By the end, my legs weren’t tired but my head was spinning with stories—somehow both ancient and totally alive.
