What’s the experience like?

Someone hands me a headset before we even reach the gates of Pompeii. Our guide—Francesca, I think?—waves us over, her voice already crackling through the earpiece as she points out the grooves in the ancient stones. She says they’re from Roman carts, and I’m surprised how clear they still are. The air smells dusty and warm, almost sweet somehow. We pause at a faded fresco—she laughs gently when I ask if that color is original. “Most of it,” she says, “but time does its own painting.” I keep thinking about how quiet it is inside these old walls compared to the bus ride down from Rome.

Lunch is at a little place nearby—nothing fancy, but the bread has that chewy crust you only get here. Someone at our table tries to order in Italian and gets a big grin from the waiter. I can’t remember what kind of pasta I had but it was lemony and bright, which makes sense once we get to Sorrento later. The drive along the coast is all blue haze and flashes of sunlight on water; everyone gets quiet for a bit just watching out the window.

Sorrento feels different—lighter somehow. There’s this citrus smell everywhere (lemons stacked in crates outside shops), and people move slower here. At the limoncello spot, our host pours tiny glasses for us to try; it burns a little but tastes like summer. I say “grazie” too quietly and she smiles anyway. We have some free time after that—I just wandered down to look at the sea for a while, thinking about those Pompeii streets and how much life fits into one day trip from Rome. Still not sure how they fit so much into twelve hours without it feeling rushed.
