What’s the experience like?

I honestly thought arriving in Venice would be chaos. You hear stories about the crowds and the maze of canals, but when we landed at Marco Polo Airport, there was this guy holding a sign with my name — big relief. He smiled and said “Benvenuti,” which I probably butchered trying to repeat. The air outside smelled faintly salty, like you’re already close to the sea, even though you can’t see it yet. Our driver helped with the bags (I always overpack), and we slid into this spotless Mercedes with that new-car-leather scent. There was WiFi onboard, which I didn’t expect — I texted my mom before we even left the parking lot.

The drive to Piazzale Roma wasn’t long — maybe 20 minutes? — but it was just enough time for me to realize how different this place is from anywhere else I’ve been. The driver pointed out a church dome in the distance and told us about his favorite bakery near the station (I wish I’d asked for directions). At Piazzale Roma, he handed us off gently to another guy who seemed to know exactly where our boat was waiting. There’s something surreal about stepping from a car straight onto a wooden dock while people around you are greeting each other in Italian or rolling suitcases across cobblestones.

The water taxi part felt like entering another world. Our guide loaded our bags without fuss and steered us through narrow canals that opened suddenly into wide blue-green spaces. The engine hummed underfoot; I leaned out and caught this weird mix of diesel and briny lagoon air. We passed under bridges so low I ducked instinctively (unnecessary, but still), and at one point our guide pointed out the Rialto Bridge glowing in late afternoon light. Didn’t expect to feel so much like a movie extra. When we reached our hotel dock, he helped us off — didn’t rush, just nodded like he had all day. That first glimpse of Venice from the water sticks with me more than any postcard ever could.
