What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel so swept up in Verona’s old streets—maybe it was the way our guide, Chiara, greeted us with this warm “Ciao!” that made it all feel less like a tour and more like wandering with someone who actually lives here. We started at Piazza Brà, which is bigger than I pictured, with the Arena right there—ancient stones and the echo of someone tuning a violin drifting out from inside. The air smelled faintly of coffee and something sweet from a nearby café. I kept thinking about how many people must’ve crossed this square over centuries. It’s wild.

Chiara led us through alleys that twisted into Piazza delle Erbe—a jumble of colors and voices, fruit stalls, locals talking with their hands (a lot), and statues that look almost surprised to still be standing. She told us about the layers of history here—Romans, Venetians, Austrians—all leaving their fingerprints. At one point she paused by a faded fresco on a wall and said her grandmother used to tell her stories about these paintings as a kid. That stuck with me for some reason.

Of course we stopped at Juliet’s house—yeah, it’s touristy but honestly? Seeing people scribbling notes or just staring up at that tiny balcony made me smile. Someone tried to read Shakespeare in Italian (not easy) and everyone laughed—including Chiara. The walk isn’t tough at all; my friend had a stroller and managed fine.
