What’s the experience like?

The first thing I heard after customs was reggae playing somewhere behind the arrivals hall — not loud, just enough to make me grin. I found Desk 8 (there’s a little sign) and a woman with bright nails waved me over, asking how my flight was. She called out my name before I even reached the counter, which honestly made me feel less lost than usual after a long haul. The air outside was heavy and sweet — like someone left mangoes out in the sun.

Our driver, Mr. Clarke, loaded up the shuttle while chatting about which hotels everyone was headed to — some folks were off to Negril, others Ocho Rios. He said it’d be about 90 minutes for mine (Runaway Bay), but “don’t worry, we’ll get you there before you start craving jerk chicken.” The van was cool inside (thank god for AC), and I noticed everyone sort of relaxed once we pulled away from the airport traffic. Someone’s toddler started giggling at the way the palm trees flickered past the window — it’s funny what you remember.

I didn’t expect to learn anything on an airport transfer, but Mr. Clarke pointed out where Hurricane Melissa had flooded a road last month — he laughed that they “never close for weather here.” There’s something comforting about being driven by someone who knows every shortcut and pothole between Montego Bay and Trelawny. If you’re nervous about getting from MBJ to your hotel without fuss or taxi haggling, this shuttle is just easy. I still think about that first breath of sea air when the doors opened at my stop.
