What’s the experience like?

We were already halfway up the drive to Rose Hall Great House before I realized how different everything feels after dark. The air was thick — not just humid, but heavy with that kind of quiet you only get when everyone’s holding their breath. Our driver, Andre, cracked a joke about Annie Palmer watching us from the windows. I laughed, but honestly? My skin prickled a little.

Inside, our guide Marsha didn’t waste time. She started right in with the White Witch stories — her voice echoing off those old wooden floors. There’s this one spot on the staircase where she paused and let us listen. I swear I heard something creak above us (probably just the house settling, but still). The candlelight flickered against the peeling wallpaper and for a second it felt like we’d slipped into another century. That smell — old wood mixed with something sweet and smoky — stuck to my clothes all night.

I tried asking Marsha how much of it she really believed. She just grinned and said, “You’ll know by morning.” We wandered through rooms where Annie supposedly did her worst; some people in our group kept close together, others hung back like they were waiting for something to jump out. I’m not sure what I expected from a day trip to Rose Hall from Montego Bay, but it wasn’t this weird mix of history lesson and goosebumps. The drive back was mostly quiet except for Andre humming along to the radio — maybe nobody wanted to break whatever spell that place put on us.
