What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous stepping off the plane in Montego Bay—maybe it was the heat or just that travel haze. But then I spotted my name on a sign, right where they said they’d be. Our driver (I think his name was Devon?) gave this easy smile and helped with my bag before I even asked. The air outside was thick and sweet—like sugarcane and sunblock—and honestly, I felt myself relax for the first time all day.

The drive to Negril took about 90 minutes but didn’t feel long at all. Devon had reggae on low, windows up because of the A/C (thank god), and he handed me a cold drink—just water, but it tasted so good after that flight. He pointed out little things along the way—tiny roadside fruit stalls, goats wandering like they owned the place. At one point he laughed when I tried to pronounce “Lucea” like a local. I still don’t think I got it right.

There’s something about watching palm trees flick by while someone else handles the roads (and Jamaican roads are… lively). It’s not fancy or anything, but it’s comfortable. We talked about his family in Hanover and how busy the airport gets during winter. When we pulled up to my hotel in Negril, he double-checked my name again—some kind of security thing—and made sure I had everything before waving goodbye. That simple ride set the tone for my whole trip.
