What’s the experience like?

We’d barely made it through customs at Montego Bay before I spotted my name on a sign—handwritten, a little smudged, which somehow made it feel more real. Our driver, Andre, grinned wide and waved us over. He asked if we wanted the AC blasting or just a breeze from the window (I went for AC—humidity hit me like a thick blanket). He loaded our bags so fast I almost forgot one behind. The van smelled faintly of coconut and something sweet I couldn’t place. Maybe guava? Or just Jamaica in general.

The drive to Negril was longer than I expected but didn’t drag. Andre pointed out spots along the coast where he said his cousins go fishing early in the morning—“before the tourists wake up,” he joked. We passed roadside stands with bright fruit stacked in pyramids and kids waving at cars. There’s this moment when you catch your first glimpse of the ocean—sunlight bouncing off blue water—and it’s hard not to feel like you’re finally on vacation. Andre told us stories about growing up nearby; he laughed when I tried to pronounce “Negril” right (I still don’t think I’ve got it).

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed so quickly after landing, honestly. The ride was smooth, even with a bit of reggae on the radio and Andre humming along under his breath. When we pulled up at our hotel, he helped us with every bag—even my lopsided backpack—and wished us a good stay “like family.” That stuck with me for some reason.
