What’s the experience like?

We rolled our bags out of Sangster Airport and there he was — Devon, holding a little sign with my name (spelled right, which honestly felt like a good omen). The air outside hit me first: warm, heavy, kind of sweet with a whiff of salt. Devon grinned and waved us over to his van, which looked spotless inside — cold AC already humming. I always get nervous about airport transfers, but this felt easy, like someone’s cousin picking you up.

The drive from Montego Bay airport to RIU Reggae didn’t take long, maybe 15 minutes? But Devon chatted the whole way — told us about his favorite jerk chicken spot (not the touristy one), pointed out where Usain Bolt went to school. He even slowed down so we could see the sea through a gap in the palms. My partner asked if we could stop for water and it wasn’t a problem at all. I guess that’s the thing about a private transfer: you don’t have to feel weird asking for little things.

I kept thinking how different it felt from those big shuttle buses — no waiting around for other people or awkward small talk. Just us and Devon’s reggae playlist in the background. He laughed when I tried to say “Montego Bay” with his accent (I definitely butchered it). The whole ride felt relaxed, like Jamaica was easing us in before we even got to RIU Palace. I still remember that first blast of cool air when we stepped inside the van — pure relief after customs.
