What’s the experience like?

Hands full of crisp paper, I tried folding my first crane in Kyoto — our guide, Yuki, watched with a grin. She’d just shown us how to crease the wings properly (I still think mine looked more like a frog). We’d started that morning with a quiet pickup right at our Osaka hotel; no fuss, just a gentle “good morning” and off we went. The drive into Kyoto felt calm — mist on the windows and the city slowly waking up outside. When we reached Arashiyama’s Bamboo Grove, it was quieter than I expected. The air smelled green and cool, and every step made this soft crunch underfoot. My daughter kept peeking up for monkeys but only spotted one — or maybe it was just someone’s hat bobbing through the stalks.

I didn’t expect to love Fushimi Inari Shrine as much as I did. The red torii gates really do seem endless when you’re walking under them — there’s this rhythm to your steps that makes you slow down without thinking about it. Yuki explained how each gate is donated by someone hoping for luck or success; she even pointed out one from her uncle’s company (she laughed and said he still brags about it). Afterward, we ducked into a tiny sweets shop she recommended — not touristy at all — where we tried mochi dusted with kinako powder. It stuck to my fingers but tasted nutty-sweet and warm somehow.

The drive to Nara was longer than I thought (maybe an hour?), but our guide had WiFi in the van so the kids streamed cartoons while I stared out at rice fields flickering past. At Nara Park, the deer were everywhere — not shy at all. One tried to nibble my sleeve because I held onto the crackers too long. Feeding them is chaotic and funny; they bow their heads before you hand over a treat (Yuki said they’re trained by grandmas who feed them every day). We wandered over to Todai-ji Temple after that, where the Buddha statue inside is honestly massive — you can feel everyone go quiet when they walk in. There’s something heavy about that silence.

I think what surprised me most was how unhurried everything felt on this day trip from Kyoto or Osaka. We could stop for snacks or bathroom breaks whenever we needed — no rush at all. The pace just sort of fit us, which sounds simple but isn’t always easy to find on tours like this.
