What’s the experience like?

The elevator dinged and I could already spot my driver outside the lobby window, holding up a sign with my name — honestly, I felt a little famous for a second. It was still early, that soft Tokyo morning hush before the city really wakes up. My suitcase wheels rattled over the tiled floor as I hurried out, and the driver gave me this polite bow (I always try to bow back but probably look awkward). He took my bags right away — didn’t even let me lift them — and then we were off toward Haneda Airport.

I watched the city slide by through the window, those tiny corner bakeries just opening up, steam rising from street vents. Our driver checked his phone for traffic updates now and then — he explained in careful English that he’d picked a route to avoid any jams so I wouldn’t worry about missing my flight. There’s something calming about someone else handling all that. The car was cool and quiet inside; I could finally breathe out after days of squeezing onto trains with my backpack poking strangers (sorry again to whoever that was on the Ginza line).

We reached Haneda faster than I expected, actually. The driver helped unload everything and insisted on wheeling my suitcase right up to the terminal doors. He wished me a good journey in Japanese — “Yoi tabi o,” I think? — and smiled when I tried repeating it back (probably butchered it). It’s funny how those small gestures stick with you more than any big sightseeing moment. Even leaving Tokyo felt like someone cared if I got there safe.
