What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest, I signed up for this dolphin watching tour in Martinique mostly out of curiosity (and maybe a bit of hope for an easy morning on the water). But once we stepped onto Captain Greg’s boat—sun already warming the wooden planks, that faint salty smell clinging to everything—I felt something shift. The first time someone shouted “there!” and pointed out into the blue—well, I nearly dropped my juice. Dolphins really do just appear like that, all smooth arcs and quick splashes. After that we headed towards Bellefontaine. The bat cave looked almost fake at first—dark mouth yawning open against bright rocks—and when Greg said we could swim nearby, I hesitated (bats and I aren’t friends). But honestly? The water was so clear you could see every ripple over the coral below. Some folks dove straight in; I took my time. There was this moment underwater where everything went quiet except for my own bubbles—kind of peaceful, actually.

Back on board, Greg handed around these warm savory pâtés and poured planter punch (watch out—it’s stronger than it tastes). Li laughed when I tried to say “merci” with my mouth full; probably butchered it but nobody cared. We sat in a circle passing fruit and homemade juice under that faded awning while the coast slipped by outside. It felt more like hanging out with friends than being on a tour. Even now, if I close my eyes, I can almost taste that pastry again.
