What’s the experience like?

We pushed off from the marina just as the morning was waking up — pelicans flapping around, that salty breeze already sticking to my skin. Our captain, who introduced herself as Ana, grinned and pointed out Lover’s Beach before I’d even found my balance. There’s something about seeing those rock formations up close — Neptune’s Finger, Pelican Rock, all these names I’d only seen on maps. The sea lions were louder than I expected; one barked so sharply it made a kid next to me jump. We drifted right under the Arch of Cabo San Lucas, everyone fumbling for their phones but also sort of just staring. It felt bigger than I thought it would.

The ride out into the Sea of Cortez was smoother than I hoped (I get seasick sometimes, but not today), music playing low while Ana told us about the reef we’d be visiting. She and Li — both marine biologists — started swapping whale rescue stories in Spanish and English, then paused to show us a school of silvery fish darting below. Someone passed around sunscreen that smelled like coconut; I forgot mine so I borrowed some and probably overdid it. When we finally anchored near the coral reef, the water was that impossible blue-green you see in postcards but never believe is real.

I hesitated at first — always do with snorkeling gear — but Li helped me adjust my mask and made some joke about “fish selfies.” The water was cool at first touch but warm underneath, and suddenly there were these flashes of yellow and electric blue everywhere. At one point a pufferfish drifted by like he owned the place. Back on board after what felt like ten minutes (it was almost an hour), Ana handed out cold beers and sodas with chips and fruit slices. My hair was full of salt, skin sticky from sunblock, but honestly? That snack tasted better than any fancy lunch.
