What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel so relieved just spotting my name on that little sign at the airport in Cancun. After the usual shuffle through arrivals, there was Luis grinning, waving the banner like we were old friends. The air outside was thick and salty (and kind of sticky on my arms), but stepping into the van felt like someone hit pause on all the chaos out there. It’s funny how quiet it gets once those doors close. No sharing with strangers—just us and our bags, which was honestly all I wanted after a red-eye flight.

The drive to Playa del Carmen went by quicker than I thought—maybe an hour? I lost track staring out at the blur of palm trees and faded billboards. Luis pointed out a roadside fruit stand where he said they have the best mangoes if you ever want to stop (we didn’t this time, but next trip for sure). He asked if we needed music or AC adjusted, which felt thoughtful without being over-the-top. There’s something about having a local behind the wheel that makes you relax a bit more—you know they’ve done this route a thousand times.

We passed through stretches where the light flickered between thick jungle and sudden open sky, and I kept thinking how glad I was not to be crammed into one of those big shuttle buses making endless hotel stops. When we pulled up to our Airbnb in Playa del Carmen, Luis helped with our bags and even waited while we double-checked the address (I always get nervous about that part). If you’re heading to Puerto Aventuras or catching a ferry at Puerto Juárez, it’s basically the same deal—just direct, no fuss. I still think about that first cool rush of AC when we got in; sometimes it’s those tiny comforts that stick with you.
