What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the way the light cut through the trees as we bumped along the Ruta de Los Cenotes outside Puerto Morelos. Our driver, Mario, kept laughing at my attempts to pronounce “cenote” — I still don’t think I got it right. The air smelled a bit earthy, kind of sweet from the gum trees, and there was this quiet except for birds and our tires crunching gravel. It felt like we were sneaking into some secret part of the jungle.

I’d seen photos of cenotes before but standing at the edge of that first open one — honestly, my stomach did a little flip. The water looked almost too clear to be real. We tried out the rope swing (my landing was not graceful; everyone saw), then zipped across treetops on these five zip-lines strung up between impossibly tall trunks. Our guide, Karla, showed us how to check the harnesses — she’s done this hundreds of times but still grinned like it was her first go. The cavernous cenote was cooler and darker inside; you could hear every drip echo off stone.

Lunch came just when I needed it — after all that swimming and climbing, I’d have eaten anything, but what they served was actually good. Homemade tortillas, chicken cooked in banana leaves (Karla called it “pollo pibil,” which I probably mispronounced again). There was this smoky salsa that nearly made me tear up (in a good way). The group sat together at a long wooden table while someone’s uncle played music somewhere behind us. I caught myself thinking about how different everything tasted here — or maybe it’s just being hungry after jumping off things all morning.

On the drive back to our hotel, everyone got quiet for a while — tired in that good way you only get after doing something out of your comfort zone. I keep remembering how cold that first jump felt on my skin and how Karla laughed when I hesitated at the edge.
