What’s the experience like?

We were still shaking off that weird airplane sleep when we spotted our names on a little tablet at the Black Luxury Service booth — honestly, I was half-expecting to get lost in the shuffle at Tulum Airport but nope, our driver was already waving. He messaged us on WhatsApp right after we landed (I fumbled with my SIM card for way too long), so finding him was easy. The air outside hit me first — thick, warm, kind of sweet — and then suddenly I realized how relieved I felt not having to haggle with random taxi guys or figure out where the shuttle lines started.

Our minivan was spotless and cool inside. There were bottles of water waiting for us (I drank mine in about two gulps) and these little facial wipes that actually felt great after hours of recycled plane air. Wi-Fi worked right away, so we could tell our friends back home we’d made it in one piece. Our driver — I think his name was Miguel? — asked if we wanted music or just quiet. He told us about the different hotel zones as we passed by signs for Akumal and Playa del Carmen. I tried to pronounce “Bahia Soliman” and he laughed, said it better himself. Felt more like being picked up by a friend than anything official.

The drive itself went by in this sort of haze — palm trees flickering past the windows, a few rain drops hitting the glass for maybe five minutes before the sun came back out. We didn’t talk much after a while; just watched everything slide past and let ourselves land properly in Mexico. It’s funny how something as simple as a private transfer can set the tone for a whole trip. I still think about that first stretch of road into Tulum, all nerves finally gone.
