Summary

Blue Cave swims, fortress secrets and island legends in Boka Bay

You’ll ride across Boka Bay by private boat with a local guide who knows every story behind these waters — from exploring hidden submarine tunnels near Rose village to swimming in the surreal blue light of Lustica’s famous cave, pausing at Mamula fortress and ending at Our Lady of the Rocks where legends linger in every stone.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“That’s not a rock, it’s concrete,” our skipper laughed as we drifted close to the shore near Rose. I squinted — he was right. The entrance to the old submarine tunnel looked like something out of a spy movie, half-hidden behind fake boulders. The walls inside felt cold and echoey, and I swear you could still smell old engine oil if you breathed in deep enough. Marko (our guide) told us stories about Yugoslav submarines hiding here, and for a second I tried to imagine what it sounded like back then — probably less seagulls, more secrets.

After that we cut across the Bay of Kotor — wind picking up just enough to slap my hair around — toward Mamula Island. The fortress is massive up close, all grey stone and strange silence except for waves slapping the walls. Marko got quiet when he mentioned its past as a prison during WWII. He said some locals won’t even visit because of what happened there. It’s weird seeing it now with plans for fancy hotels; hard not to think about the layers of history under your feet.

The sun was already high when we reached the Blue Cave on Lustica Peninsula. From outside it looked ordinary but once inside, everything glowed electric blue from below — even my hands shimmered underwater. We jumped in (cold at first!) and floated for a while just staring at the colors flickering off the cave ceiling. I still think about that light sometimes when I close my eyes.

Last stop was Our Lady of the Rocks near Perast. The island is tiny but feels almost sacred; fishermen built it stone by stone over centuries after finding an icon washed ashore (at least that’s how Marko tells it). There’s a little church with creaky wooden pews and faded paintings, plus a museum if you want to see more — costs two euros extra but worth poking your head in if you’re curious about local legends or weird sailor traditions. We sat on the edge for a bit before heading back, legs dangling over the water, just listening to boat engines far off and gulls circling overhead.
