Summary

Ride camels across Erg Chebbi dunes sleep under Sahara stars

You’ll cross Morocco from Marrakech to Merzouga by way of mountain passes and rose valleys, ride camels over Erg Chebbi’s dunes at sunset, share music around a campfire with Berber hosts, and wake up under Saharan skies before heading on to Fes. If you’ve ever wondered what real desert silence feels like — you’ll know after this trip.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We left Marrakech early — honestly, I was still half-asleep when our driver knocked on the door. The city faded fast behind us, replaced by those switchbacks up into the High Atlas. I kept rolling down the window for air, just to catch that pine-and-dust smell. Our guide, Youssef, pointed out little villages clinging to the hillsides — he grew up in one nearby. Somewhere after Tizi-n-Tichka pass (the air got thinner there), we stopped for mint tea and I tried to order in my terrible French. The guy running the café just grinned and handed me a glass anyway.

The landscape changed so many times I lost count — Ouarzazate’s flat ochre walls, then suddenly pink roses everywhere in the Valley of Roses. By late afternoon, we reached Merzouga and you could feel sand in the wind already. Camels were waiting by a kasbah; mine was called “Bob Marley” (Youssef laughed at that). Riding into Erg Chebbi at sunset felt unreal — orange light on endless dunes, no sound but hooves and wind. My legs were jelly by the time we reached camp but someone handed me more mint tea (it’s basically currency here). Dinner was tagine under a sky so full of stars it didn’t look real; then drums started up around the fire and a couple of Berber guys sang while we all tried to clap along.

I woke before dawn — couldn’t really sleep with all that silence pressing in. Walked out onto the dunes alone and watched sunrise turn everything gold, cold sand under my feet. Breakfast back at camp tasted better than it should’ve (maybe because I was starving). On the way back toward Fes we stopped in Rissani for dates — I bought too many, as usual — then drove through Ziz Valley with its sudden green palms after so much rock. There were more mountains after Midelt but honestly by then I just wanted to nap.
