What’s the experience like?

We’d barely left Marrakech when the landscape just shifted—flat city dust giving way to these wild green stretches and sudden sharp peaks. The van was quiet except for our guide, Youssef, humming along to some old Amazigh song on the radio. He pointed out patches of argan trees and I remember catching that first whiff of mountain air—cooler, with something sweet in it, maybe wild herbs or just relief from the city heat. We stopped at a Berber house called Dar Zite, where Fatima handed us mint tea (so much better than anything I’ve had at home) and showed us how they press argan oil. I tried grinding some myself—made more mess than oil, honestly.

The drive up to Setti Fatma felt like threading through a painting—stone houses clinging to the hillside, kids waving as we passed. At one point Youssef joked about how his grandmother still hikes faster than him up those trails. The actual walk to the waterfalls was steeper than I expected; my shoes slipped once on a wet rock and this old man behind me just grinned and offered his hand. The water crashed down so loud you had to shout over it if you wanted anyone to hear you. Sunlight caught in the spray—felt good on my face after all that climbing.

Lunch happened right next to the river—tables half in shade, half in sun. Tagine bubbling away while we dangled our feet close enough to get splashed now and then. There’s something about eating with your hands after a morning like that; it just fits. I watched a group of local women laughing together at another table, their voices carrying over the water. The ride back was quieter—maybe tiredness or maybe everyone was just replaying their favorite bit in their heads. I still think about that first sip of tea at Dar Zite sometimes—you know?
