What’s the experience like?

Right after our guide picked us up—always on time, by the way—we rolled through Maputo’s early morning streets. There’s this salty breeze from the bay that you notice right away, mixing with the smell of fresh pão from street vendors. First stop: the old railway station. It’s not just a photo spot; locals actually use it, and you’ll see people chatting under those green iron arches. Our guide shared stories about how the station was designed by an associate of Eiffel (yep, that Eiffel), which I’d never have guessed.

We wandered over to the Cathedral and then ducked into FEIMA Art Craft Market. The colors here are wild—woven baskets, wood carvings, paintings everywhere. I chatted with a vendor named Celina who let me try on a capulana wrap; she laughed when I fumbled with the knot. The fortress was next—cool inside even when it’s hot outside—and you can still see marks from old battles on the walls. The Museum of Natural History had these quirky dioramas of local wildlife (the elephant room is unforgettable). If you’re here on a Monday when museums close, they swap in other local spots so you don’t miss out.

We finished at Tunduro Gardens. It’s shady and calm—kids playing soccer, couples sharing snacks on benches. Our driver kept the van cool (blessing when it gets humid), and there was always cold water handy. Don’t forget sunscreen; even if it looks cloudy, that sun sneaks up on you fast in Maputo.
