What’s the experience like?

Hands gripping the headset, I watched Gus flick a few switches overhead — he’s one of those pilots who grins like he’s still surprised by his own job. We lifted off from Franz Josef, rotor thumping in my chest, and suddenly the whole West Coast was just green and white below us. The first sweep over Franz Josef Glacier looked almost fake, all blue cracks and that weird silence you get inside a helicopter (except for Gus pointing out tiny hikers far below — “they look like ants until you land up there,” he said).

I’d read about the day trip from Franz Josef to see the glaciers, but nothing prepared me for how close we got to Fox Glacier. The ice is rougher than I thought — not smooth at all — and there was this moment when sunlight bounced off so many jagged edges it almost hurt to look. My partner tried to film but mostly just laughed at my face; I didn’t realize I’d been holding my breath. Then Tasman Glacier came into view, wide as a river, with Mount Cook looming behind it. The windows fogged up a bit from our nervous excitement or maybe just the cold air sneaking in.

The snow landing was quick but surreal. Stepping out onto this patch of untouched snow high in the Southern Alps, boots crunching down, I caught a whiff of something sharp and mineral — probably just clean air but it felt different somehow. Everyone took turns posing awkwardly for photos (Gus is patient about that), but honestly I just wanted to stand there and listen to nothing for a second. There’s a kind of hush up there you don’t get anywhere else; even my phone felt out of place.

Back in the chopper, someone asked if Gus ever gets bored of these views. He just shook his head — “not once.” That stuck with me more than any photo did.
