What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect my heart to thump so hard when the ski plane’s skis scraped the snow on Tasman Glacier. The air felt sharper up there, almost blue-cold, and our guide—Dave, I think?—grinned like he’d done this a thousand times but still got a kick out of it. He pointed out Aoraki/Mount Cook rising behind us while we shuffled awkwardly in our boots, crunching over snow that looked soft but was actually packed tight. There was this moment when the engines cut and it went silent except for someone’s laugh echoing weirdly off the ice. I just stood there breathing in the cold and thinking, “How did I get here?”

Switching from the ski plane to the helicopter right on the glacier felt a bit like changing cars in the middle of nowhere—except with rotors spinning overhead and everyone half-squinting in the bright sun. I fumbled with my headset (they give you one so you can hear all the commentary) and tried not to look too much like a tourist, but honestly, who cares? The pilot chatted about braided rivers below as we lifted off again—he even pointed out where avalanches had smoothed down parts of the slope last week. My hands were freezing but I couldn’t stop taking photos through that weirdly clear glass.

The whole thing’s only 45 minutes but it messes with your sense of time. You see Mount Cook from angles you’d never get hiking or driving—like someone’s letting you peek behind a curtain. Afterward, back at base, I kept finding snow stuck to my boots and grinning for no reason. If you’re ever near Mount Cook and thinking about this flight combo, just do it. There’s really nothing else quite like landing on a glacier between a ski plane and a chopper—and yeah, I still think about that hush after the engines stopped.
