What’s the experience like?

I’d heard about the Sacred Valley before but never really pictured what it would feel like until we were actually there. Our guide, Juan, met us right at our hotel in Urubamba—he greeted us with this warm “buenos días” that made me relax instantly. The drive to Ollantaytambo was quiet except for the sound of distant roosters and those little mototaxis zipping by. I remember rolling down the window just to smell that cool mountain air—kind of earthy, with a hint of eucalyptus? At Ollantaytambo Ruins, Juan pointed out how the stones fit together so tightly you couldn’t even slide a postcard between them. I tried (he laughed), but yeah—not a chance.

Next up was Moray. Those circular terraces look strange in photos but standing above them is different—you can actually feel the temperature shift as you walk down each level. Juan explained how the Incas used this place as an agricultural lab, which honestly blew my mind. I kept thinking about how much work went into every single stone and step. Then we drove to Maras Salt Pools; they’re whiter than I expected, almost blinding under the sun. The smell is sharp and mineral—like wet rocks after rain—and we watched a local family scraping salt into piles while their dog slept in the shade. It’s small moments like that which stick.

Lunch wasn’t included but Juan suggested a spot where everyone seemed to know him (always a good sign). After eating too much choclo with cheese, we made our way to Chinchero. There’s something about that place—the women weaving outside, their hands moving so fast it was hard to keep up. One of them let me try spinning wool; I messed it up completely but she just grinned and fixed it without missing a beat. The ruins here felt quieter than the others somehow—less crowded, more space to think.

The whole Sacred Valley private tour took most of the day but didn’t feel rushed at all. We stopped when we wanted, asked questions (a lot), and never got shuffled into any tourist shops or rushed past things that caught our eye. By the time we got dropped back at our hotel, my shoes were dusty and my head was full—still is, honestly.
