What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous about landing at Krakow Balice Airport after dark — I’d heard stories about confusing taxi queues and drivers waving signs with names that look nothing like yours. But there he was, my name spelled out perfectly (even the Polish letters), waiting by arrivals. The air outside was colder than I expected, but the car was warm inside, smelled faintly of new upholstery and maybe a hint of someone’s cologne from earlier. Our driver Marek grinned and took my suitcase like it weighed nothing.

The drive into Krakow wasn’t long — maybe half an hour? Traffic was light, so we just floated along while Marek pointed out where the Vistula river curves past the old town. He asked if I’d ever tried oscypek cheese (I hadn’t), then told me which bakery near my hotel did the best pączki. Honestly, it felt more like being picked up by a distant cousin than a stranger. I remember watching rain streak sideways across the window as we passed some neon-lit petrol station, thinking how glad I was not to be figuring out buses in that weather.

He even checked my flight before leaving home, so when my plane landed early he was already there — apparently this is normal for these private airport transfers in Krakow. I didn’t have to worry about extra fees for traffic or parking either; Marek just waved it off when I asked. The whole thing felt easy in a way travel rarely does. If only every arrival could start like that.
