What’s the experience like?

I didn’t really know what to expect when we left Albufeira Marina — just that I’d seen those pictures of the Benagil cave everywhere. Turns out, you can’t actually go inside anymore (our guide João explained it’s a new rule — safety or something), but honestly, paddling right up to the mouth of that huge cave was still wild. The sea was glassy that morning, but there was this salty breeze, and someone on the boat pointed out how the cliffs looked almost pink in the early light. I tried to take a photo but my hands were already slippery from sunscreen.

The catamaran part felt like a bonus — space to stretch out, grab a drink (cash only, which I forgot), and just watch the coastline roll by for about 40 minutes before we even touched the kayaks. João gave us this quick safety talk that made me feel less awkward about being a total beginner. Once we got in the water, it was surprisingly quiet except for our paddles and one guy laughing because he’d spun his kayak around backwards. We hugged close to these crazy rock formations — some looked like they might tip over if you sneezed too hard — and slipped into smaller caves where you could smell wet stone and seaweed. There were moments I just stopped paddling to float and stare up at these impossible arches overhead.

We didn’t land on any beaches (I guess tides can be tricky), but there were tiny coves where João would pause and tell us little stories — like about fishermen who used to hide here during storms. At one point he tried teaching us the Portuguese word for “seagull” (gaivota?) and everyone butchered it except him. On the way back, arms tired in that good way, I sat on deck watching spray catch rainbows in the sun. I still think about how small I felt next to those cliffs — in a good way.
