What’s the experience like?

“Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the salt on your lips,” Tiago grinned as he handed me the paddle. I’d just met him at Time Out Market in Lisbon—he drove us out to Sesimbra in this van that smelled faintly of sunscreen and coffee. The drive was about 50 minutes, winding through hills that got greener the closer we got. Everyone was half awake until we hit the water; suddenly, it felt like we’d left city life somewhere far behind.

The kayaks were these bright doubles—surprisingly stable, even when I accidentally splashed my partner (sorry, again). Paddling along the Arrábida cliffs, I kept getting distracted by how the sunlight hit the limestone—sort of gold and pale blue at once. Tiago pointed out little caves tucked into the rocks; he told us stories about smugglers and fishermen from Sesimbra’s past. The air smelled briny and fresh, with a hint of pine drifting down from above. At one point a cormorant dove right next to us—I nearly dropped my paddle.

We landed at Ribeiro do Cavalo Beach after maybe an hour or so (I lost track). The sand was soft but gritty enough to stick everywhere, and Tiago spread out blankets for our picnic. He’d packed baguette sandwiches—simple but perfect after paddling—and these little pastel de nata that made me wish I’d brought more napkins. I remember just sitting there, toes buried in sand, listening to someone strum a guitar further down the beach. It felt like time slowed down for a bit.

Paddling back was easier—the wind had shifted in our favor—and everyone seemed quieter, maybe just tired or maybe soaking it all in. On the drive home, my arms were sore but in that good way where you know you’ve done something real. I still think about that view of the cliffs every now and then—hard to describe unless you’ve been there yourself.
