What’s the experience like?

The first thing I heard was the slap of water against the boat as we crossed to Almourol Castle. It’s just this small island in the Tagus, but somehow it felt huge—like the river was keeping secrets. Our guide, João, pointed out the old stones where Romans once stood before the Templars built their fortress. He told us why they picked this spot for protection, but honestly, I kept staring at that weathered doorway and wondering who else had walked through it. The air smelled kind of green and river-cold; my shoes were still damp from a puddle on the dock.

Later in Tomar, we wandered narrow streets where Templar marks are everywhere if you know how to look. João showed us the Signum Salomonis carved above a church door—he made me try saying it in Portuguese and laughed when I tripped over the words. Inside, it was cool and shadowy. There’s this weird trick: the church looks small outside but is sunk two meters below ground, so stepping down felt like entering another layer of time. We passed Guladim Pais’ tomb (he founded Tomar) and João said locals still leave flowers sometimes. Didn’t expect that.

The Convent of Christ is wild—octagonal sanctuary with sunlight slanting through ancient windows, all angles and echoes. There’s also a synagogue tucked right in town; João explained how Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived side by side here for centuries. I tried picturing those days while we stood under faded arches. Before heading back toward Lisbon, we stopped at Pegões Aqueduct—just stone arches stretching forever across fields six kilometers out of town. The wind up there smelled like grass and dust and something old I can’t name.
