What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest, I was nervous about the snorkeling part. We left Villa Mariana just after sunrise — I’d barely finished my coffee and already the salty air was waking me up. The boat ride out to Culebra Island took about 50 minutes, but it felt shorter because our guide, Carlos, kept pointing out little things along the way — a pelican dive here, some odd-shaped clouds there. He had this easy way of making everyone laugh, even the kids who were half-asleep at first.

When we finally anchored off Culebra, the water looked almost fake — like someone cranked up the color settings. I wasn’t sure about jumping in (I’m not exactly a pro), but Carlos gave me a quick lesson right there on deck. Afterwards we all climbed back on board for lunch — chicken salad, pasta salad, all that good stuff laid out buffet style. Someone passed around piña coladas (the non-alcoholic ones for the kids) and fruit platters that tasted extra sweet after swimming. There was sun on my face and salt still drying on my skin; people sprawled out or chatting quietly while Carlos told us how he grew up fishing these waters. It felt less like a tour and more like being let in on something local.

I still think about that moment floating above the reef — how small I felt in the best possible way. If you get seasick easily maybe bring ginger candies (learned that one too late), but honestly? Even if you’re not an expert snorkeler, this Culebra Island tour is worth it just for that underwater silence.
