What’s the experience like?

Hands brushing cool stone as I stepped out near Masjid Quba—our driver had just pulled up, quietly waiting while we sorted our shoes. There was this faint scent of fresh earth in the air, maybe from the gardens nearby, or maybe it’s just what Madinah smells like in the morning. Our guide, Ahmed, greeted us with a soft “Assalamu alaikum” and a smile that made me feel like we’d met before. He didn’t rush; he let us take our time inside. I remember the gentle hush as people prayed—no one seemed hurried here.

We went on to Masjid Qiblatain next. Ahmed explained how the direction of prayer changed right there—he pointed at a spot and told us the story so plainly, like he’d heard it from his own grandfather. I tried to picture it: everyone turning mid-prayer. The sun was already warm by then, and I kept fiddling with my scarf because of the breeze coming through the open doors. At Seven Mosques (Sab’a Masajid), kids were playing outside while their parents sat under a tree. It felt less like a monument and more like a neighborhood that happened to hold centuries of stories.

There was this moment at Shuhada Uhud that stuck with me—the silence around the graves, broken only by birds overhead and someone reciting softly nearby. Ahmed gave us space but answered when I asked about Hazrat Hamza’s story (he gets this question a lot, I think). We stopped for dates later at a warehouse—a bit random after all that reflection, but honestly? The sweetness cut through everything else for a second. My hands still smelled like dates on the ride back.
