"Is that my name?" I squinted at the little sign just outside the arrivals gate at Changi—yep, there it was. Our driver, Mr. Tan, waved like he’d been waiting all day just for us (even though our flight was late and I was convinced we’d missed him). The air inside the terminal was cool but stepping out, Singapore hit me with that warm, almost sweet humidity. My backpack stuck to my shirt immediately—classic.

We shuffled into the minivan—honestly, it felt more like a relief than a ride. Mr. Tan asked about our flight in careful English and offered us bottled water before whisking us away from the airport chaos. He pointed out the Supertrees as we zipped along the expressway—said they look best at night when they light up, which made me wish we’d landed after sunset. The city felt impossibly green through the window, palms everywhere and that faint whiff of rain on hot pavement (it had just poured). I tried to pronounce “Marina Bay” like he did; he laughed and gently corrected me.

I didn’t expect how quiet it would feel inside the car after all those hours of travel noise. Just low radio static and the hum of air conditioning—my brain finally slowed down for a second. We reached our hotel in about 25 minutes; no fussing with luggage or figuring out which line to stand in. Mr. Tan handed us our bags with a nod and wished us a good stay—I still think about his patience when I’m stuck haggling for taxis elsewhere.
