What’s the experience like?

It started with a laugh from the check-in guy at the V&A Waterfront when I nervously asked if I’d get motion sick (he said it’s smoother than a taxi — he was right). We met our pilot, Thabo, who had this calm way of explaining things — not just safety stuff, but little bits about how Table Mountain always looks different depending on the light. I remember the blades spinning up and that weird mix of excitement and “what am I doing?” as we lifted off. The city shrank so fast beneath us.

Flying along the coastline, you see Cape Town in a way that feels almost unreal — like you’re peeking behind the scenes of a place you thought you knew. Thabo pointed out Muizenberg’s colorful huts and joked about surfers who never wear wetsuits (I still don’t get how they do it). There was this salty smell in the air even up there, mixed with something metallic from the chopper. When we reached Cape Point, it looked wild and jagged — nothing like pictures. The ocean really does look endless from above. I tried taking photos but honestly just gave up for a minute to stare.

After landing back at the helipad, someone handed me a glass of sparkling wine — which felt fancy after all that adrenaline. A couple next to me clinked glasses and grinned like kids. The shuttle back to the shopping center was quiet; people were mostly looking at their phones or out the window, maybe replaying what they’d just seen. I kept thinking about that curve of coastline under morning sun — it sticks with you longer than you expect.
