experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered what it’s like to watch hippos snort in the morning mist? That’s how our day in iSimangaliso Wetland Park started—windows down, that earthy smell after last night’s rain, and our ranger Sizwe humming along to some old maskandi tune on the radio. He knew every twist of those loop roads. We’d stop so he could point out a kudu half-hidden in the bush or just listen for birds I’d never even heard of. The park is huge—like, you lose track of time just watching light shift through the fever trees.

I didn’t expect how much the air changes as you get closer to Cape Vidal. It’s salty and sharp, mixing with the sweet smoke from someone grilling fish nearby (I think one of the other guides). Sizwe handed us masks and snorkels—he checked the tides first—and I swear I hesitated at first because I’m not exactly an expert swimmer. But floating over those reefs in the protected bay felt weirdly peaceful. Fish everywhere, flashes of yellow and blue under my nose. There was this moment where everything just went quiet except for my own breathing—kind of stayed with me.

Lunch was a picnic right there on the sand, nothing fancy but somehow perfect: sandwiches, fruit, cold drinks from a cooler that Sizwe kept pulling out like some magician. Monkeys kept eyeing our food but he shooed them off with a laugh. By then the sun was high and people were dozing or just staring out at the water. No rush to leave—which is rare on tours like this. On the drive back through iSimangaliso we saw buffalo blocking the road (they don’t care about schedules). Still thinking about that view across St Lucia Estuary as we left—felt like we’d been let into something special for a day.
