What’s the experience like?

You know that feeling when you wake up not quite sure if you’re ready for the day? That’s how I felt pulling into Pilanesberg, still rubbing sleep from my eyes as our guide, Sipho, grinned and handed out bottles of water. The air was cool but not cold—sort of earthy, a little sharp. Somewhere nearby, I could hear birds arguing (or maybe flirting). We climbed into the open safari vehicle and right away there was this hush—everyone just listening for whatever might move first.

Sipho had this way of spotting things before anyone else. He’d point—sometimes just a finger raised—and suddenly there’d be a rhino, or a group of zebras flicking their tails. At one point he stopped so quietly I nearly missed it—a lioness stretched out in the grass, barely more than a shadow until she flicked her ear. I tried to whisper “lion” but it came out more like a squeak. There’s something about seeing animals like that, just doing their thing, that makes you feel small in the best way.

We bumped along dirt tracks for hours (bring something soft to sit on if you can), passing elephants so close I could count the wrinkles on their trunks. The sun got warmer and someone passed around snacks—I think they were biltong? Chewy and salty. Lunch was at this little spot inside the park; nothing fancy but honestly after all that wind and dust it tasted perfect. Someone poured local wine and we all compared photos—mine were mostly blurry, but hey, the memories are sharper anyway.
