What’s the experience like?

We stepped onto the sailboat at Port Olímpic just after nine — I still had sunscreen on my hands, which made the ropes slippery when I tried to help. The city looked different from the water, quieter somehow, with the skyline all soft edges in the morning light. Our guide, Marta, pointed out Montjuïc and then let us just listen for a while — gulls overhead, a bit of wind flapping the sails, someone laughing behind me as their coffee nearly tipped over. It felt like we were leaving Barcelona but not really leaving it, if that makes sense.

The coast faded into those pale green hills near Alella before I realized how far we'd gone. We pulled into this tiny fisherman port where everything smelled faintly of seaweed and old wood. A short drive later (the van was waiting right there), we arrived at the winery — honestly, I didn’t expect it to be so old. Fourteenth century! There was this cool hush inside the stone cellar, and outside you could see vines rolling down toward the Mediterranean. The air smelled like rosemary and earth. Our sommelier, Jordi, greeted us in Catalan first — he switched to English after seeing our blank faces and grinned about it.

Walking through those vineyards with Jordi was something else; he explained how they’d switched to organic methods years ago because “the grapes are happier.” I tried one right off the vine (probably not allowed), and it tasted sharper than supermarket grapes back home. The wine tasting itself was relaxed — three pours paired with local cheese and some salty little olives I kept reaching for. Someone in our group asked about Roman history here; Jordi shrugged and said his family’s been making wine since his great-grandfather’s time but “not quite that long.”

The drive back to Barcelona felt slower, or maybe I just didn’t want it to end yet. My backpack still smells faintly of that cellar — stone dust and sweet wine mixed together. If you’re looking for a day trip from Barcelona that doesn’t feel rushed or showy, this is probably it. I still think about that view over the vines toward the sea sometimes.
