What’s the experience like?

We hadn’t even made it out of Granada when our guide, Sergio, handed me a helmet and grinned, “You’ll need this more than sunscreen today.” I laughed but honestly felt my nerves kick in. The drive through Sierra de Almijara was all sharp turns and flashes of green hills — windows down, you could smell wild herbs and something like damp stone. Sergio pointed out tiny villages tucked into the folds of the mountains. I tried to pronounce “Otívar” right; he just shook his head and said, “Close enough.”

The first step into the Rio Verde water was colder than I’d guessed — like an instant wake-up. Our wetsuits helped but still, you feel it. The river’s this wild turquoise color that almost looks fake in the sun. We practiced our first rappel on a little drop before moving to bigger ones. Sergio showed us how to check our harnesses twice (“Always double-check — trust me”), and then suddenly we were sliding down smooth rocks into deep pools. You hear your own shout echo off the canyon walls, then just water everywhere for a second.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much — there’s this moment where you’re standing at the edge of a jump, heart pounding, and someone behind you yells encouragement in Spanish (I think it was “¡Venga!”). Even if you hesitate, everyone cheers when you splash down. The air smells like wet pine needles and river moss. Sometimes it goes quiet except for birds or water dripping somewhere above you. After the last waterfall rappel (which looked scarier from above), we flopped onto warm rocks while Sergio pulled out sodas and snacks for a picnic lunch right by the riverbank. Someone popped open a bottle for a toast — not fancy but perfect after all that adrenaline.

I still think about that light on the water when we sat eating sandwiches with soggy hair and tired arms. It’s not just about the canyoning itself — it’s how everyone feels like friends by the end, swapping stories over crumbs and orange peels before heading back to Granada.
