What’s the experience like?

You know that feeling when you finally step off a long flight and your brain’s still halfway between time zones? That’s where I was, blinking at the bright lights inside Madrid Airport, when I spotted my name on a sign. The driver — Javier, I think he said — gave this little nod and a smile that felt like, “Don’t worry, I’ve got you.” There was this faint smell of coffee drifting from somewhere (maybe one of those airport cafés), and honestly, just knowing someone was waiting made me relax for the first time all day.

We walked out together — he insisted on carrying my bag even though it’s not heavy, but I let him. The van was parked close by; clean, roomy enough for our group (there were five of us), and cool inside. I remember the way the city air hit me as we left the terminal: dry but not too hot, even in late afternoon. Javier chatted a bit about Madrid traffic (apparently it’s unpredictable), and pointed out how the skyline looked different depending on which side you drive in from. He asked if we’d been before — I tried to say “gracias” properly and he grinned. My Spanish is… well, let’s say it needs work.

The drive itself was smooth — maybe twenty-five minutes? Not much talking after a while; everyone just sort of watched out the window as Madrid started to show itself in bits: flashes of tiled rooftops, an old man walking his dog near a roundabout, some graffiti that looked almost like art. At one point my friend fell asleep against her backpack. It felt safe to just be quiet for a bit. When we pulled up right outside our hotel in the city center, Javier helped unload everything and made sure we had all our bags before waving goodbye. Simple things stick with me more than big moments sometimes — like that first calm breath after arriving somewhere new.
