What’s the experience like?

I’d barely made it past the luggage carousel at Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez airport when I spotted my name on a sign — always a relief after a long flight, you know? The arrivals hall was buzzing, but my driver (Javier, I think?) just smiled and waved like we’d met before. He took my suitcase without fuss, and honestly, after that overnight flight from JFK, I was grateful not to have to think about anything else. There’s something about the way Spanish people greet you — warm but not over the top. The air outside smelled faintly of coffee and diesel; it was still early, so the city hadn’t quite woken up yet.

The Mercedes felt almost too nice for someone who’d been wearing the same hoodie for 12 hours. Javier chatted in English (his accent was easier than mine in Spanish), pointing out where the old city starts as we drove toward central Madrid. He even gave me a couple of tips about tapas bars near my hotel — I tried repeating one of the names back and he laughed gently. Traffic wasn’t bad; apparently they monitor flights so if you’re delayed, they just wait. That took a load off my mind because my connection in Paris had been tight.

I kept catching glimpses of tiled rooftops and those bright blue street signs as we got closer to Gran Vía. It’s funny how you can feel both exhausted and kind of giddy at the same time — maybe that’s just arriving somewhere new. The whole thing was simple: pickup right after baggage claim, help with bags, no awkward taxi negotiations or fumbling for euros straight off the plane. By the time we pulled up at my hotel door, I felt more like myself again. I still think about that first quiet drive through Madrid when everything felt possible.
