What’s the experience like?

You sort of tumble right into it—standing by the Federico García Lorca statue, still figuring out where to look first. Our guide, Elena, waved us over like we were already friends. She started off with this story about Spanish writers who used to live here in Barrio de las Letras. You could smell coffee drifting from somewhere nearby and hear someone laughing behind us—felt like the city was already wide awake even though it was just past noon.

The first bar looked tiny from outside but inside it was all chatter and clinking glasses. Elena ordered for us (thank god—menus here are a mystery if you don’t know your jamón from your chorizo). I tried vermouth for the first time; it tasted kind of herbal and sweet at once, not what I expected. The tortilla was warm and soft in the middle. There was this old man at the counter arguing gently with the bartender about football scores—made me smile.

We walked through Plaza Mayor next, dodging selfie sticks and pigeons, then ducked into another spot that makes its own wine. The walls had these old photos of Madrid before all the neon signs. I tried to say “gracias” properly and got a thumbs up from our server—small win. By the time we reached La Latina for our last round of tapas, the sky had turned gold and you could feel that gentle hum you get when everyone’s just… happy to be out together.

The rooftop at the end felt almost secret—like someone’s letting you in on something locals don’t usually share. Standing there with a cold drink and looking out over Gran Vía, I realized how much I’d already seen (and eaten) in just a few hours. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m back home making toast—Madrid feels far away but also kind of close now.
