What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest, I almost bailed when I realized I’d forgotten my flip-flops. Not a big deal, but you know how sand gets everywhere. Our guide, Marta, just laughed and said, “Barefoot is better for the sea anyway.” That set the tone—nothing too serious, just a bunch of us shuffling down to Los Cristianos beach, half-excited, half-nervous about this Sea Trek thing. I’d never done anything like it. The helmet looked heavier than it felt, and you could hear your own breath echoing inside once they lowered it over your head—kind of calming in a weird way.

The water was cooler than I expected when we stepped in—like that first sip of cold Fanta after walking around town all morning. Marta kept checking if everyone was okay before we followed her into the shallow channel. No swimming required at all (which my cousin appreciated). The world went quiet as soon as we descended; just bubbles and muffled voices above us. Fish darted past our feet—yellow stripes, flashes of blue—and volcanic rocks felt almost soft underfoot. At one point, someone tried waving at a fish like it was going to wave back. We all laughed through our helmets; you could see the smiles even if you couldn’t really hear them.

The whole Sea Trek underwater walk lasted maybe 20 minutes? Time got weird down there—it’s peaceful but not boring. I remember brushing my hand along black sand and thinking how strange it was to be breathing normally while standing on the ocean floor in Tenerife. When we surfaced again, Marta snapped photos of us looking dazed but happy (I still have mine on my fridge). It wasn’t what I expected at all—in a good way.
