What’s the experience like?

The drive out of Mirissa started early—windows down, warm breeze mixing with the smell of cinnamon from roadside stalls. Our guide chatted about his childhood in the area and pointed out a tiny tea shop where he used to stop for sweet roti as a kid. We made our first stop at a family-run tea factory; you could actually feel the heat coming off the drying leaves. I tried their black tea—strong, earthy, nothing like what you get back home.

Rolling into Galle Fort felt like stepping into another time. The stone walls are huge up close—way taller than they look in photos. Inside, narrow lanes twist past faded Dutch houses and little shops selling lace and old postcards. Our guide waved to a friend running a small café (I grabbed a ginger beer there later). The lighthouse stands right by the sea; you’ll hear waves slapping against the rocks while school kids play cricket nearby. There’s always something happening—a wedding shoot or someone selling mango slices with chili salt.
